2009 Chinese New Year
2009 Chinese New Year is to be remembered. This time the celebration is severely affected by the downturn of the economy and natural disaster – flood. Sibu is a small town lying along the bank of Rejang River, nicknamed the Swan City. In the past, rich tycoons emerged mainly those who were dealing with timber business which Sarawak is famous and rich for. That was the story back to the Golden Era. Once it was, now it no longer is. With a population of more than 100 thousands, Sibu is struggling hard to become a city but the promises from the current politicians are still far beyond fulfilling. Everyone is hoping; everyone is anticipating, but everyone will witness when the swan soars high.
The swan will soar when the white furs drop for the sake of being lighter, in the absence of unwanted pressure. It will soar when there is zero corruption. It will soar when the drainage system is fully repaired. It will soar when the basic amenities and facilities such as transportation to say the least, well built and developed. It will soar when all the grudges and concerns from the citizens are met, stop nodding your heads and be the Yesmen during political rallies and election periods while you can do nothing for Sibu. We are fed up with that. It will soar when those who abdicate their responsibility and those who fail to take up the onus are removed. It will soar when the government servants change their rusted mind (for those who may concern) to be more productive and efficient at work. It will soar when businessmen stop playing psychology warfare and mind games with the people. It will soar when the burden of the people is dealt…
Businessmen are losing grounds. Many are fired overnight. The breadwinners are depressed, hoping and praying for another better day. Bribers crack their brains to earn a little bit more, the more the better. 2009 is not a year to be remembered. Sibu is now a pool of water as the rainwater from the river gushed in, engulfing the low land area. Some point their fingers at the poor drainage system. Some gazed at the sky. Above all, Chinese New Year still needs to be celebrated. Everyone hopes for a better year. They pray for sunny days and the economy crisis to be healed. Everyone wishes for low prices, not during recession.
This year the CNY is losing colors. The sky is less occupied by colorful and awesome fireworks which it used to be. Firecrackers could barely able be heard. The town is flooded, washing away the mood to celebrate. The unwelcomed flood hinders the guests from visiting. It spoils everything.
I pray for a better tomorrow. I pray for a better Sibu. I pray for changes to come. I pray for the resurgence. I pray for the kingdom of God to come. I pray for the Gospel to spread and the light of God to shine. I pray for His abundant blessings and grace upon Sibu. I have a reason to believe. I take another sanguine view, because I see the Hope in Him. I pray that I can witness the swan soaring high above the sky when I return to my homeland sometimes later.
To my readers, Blessed Chinese New Year.
